At midnight on January 1, many Americans breathed a sigh of relief. Even though we knew that nothing really had changed (as I discussed in my Smerconish article yesterday), we were glad horrible 2020 was gone and hoped for a good first week of a new year. Then, bam! Insurrection! Nooses and confederate flags! Over 100 Congresspeople still trying to steal the votes of the majority of Americans by calling Black votes illegitimate! A President ready to be 25’ed! Highest death day for COVID-19!
But we cannot give up. This is still the greatest country in the world because it has the most diverse, innovative people. The bulk of the responsibility for any recovery seemed like it was going to be entirely up to businesspeople as government was totally dysfunctional. But Americans voted for a new government (a Black and a Jew being elected in Georgia?!!). So maybe we will have some allies to work with in combatting COVID, rebuilding the economy, and helping all Americans, regardless of race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, rural, suburban or urban.
